Our Story

Our Story

A dementia movement with a dance production about love, memory, and what persists when language fades.

About Unsaid Stories

Unsaid Stories is a dementia movement that uses various forms of art to advocate for the dementia community. It consists of initiatives that engage the community at various levels, culminating in a dance production, Unsaid.

The title Unsaid comes from a quote from Polish poet Anna Kamienska:

“I've learnt to value failed conversations, missed connections, confusions. What remains is what's unsaid, what's underneath, understanding on another level of being.”

— Anna Kamienska

This quote reflects the intricacies of communicating and understanding someone with dementia — that so much of it is unsaid. At the heart of it, love still remains, regardless of what is said.

Four Threads

The threads that weave this work.

Thread · 01

The Artistic Thread

The dance production was inspired by Kuo Pao Kun’s 1987 play "The Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree". Interpreted from the perspective of aging and memory loss, the work explores what this means for the relationship between loved ones. The play informs the spine of the dance production, shaping its characters and the external forces that ominously influence their relationship.

Thread · 02

The Clinical Thread

As a Medical Speech Therapist for over 10 years, Anuja has worked closely with persons living with dementia and their caregivers, observing first-hand the burden of the disease. The undercurrent of love that flows even when communication is sparse underlies the central messaging of the dance production.

Thread · 03

The Personal Thread

The production is a dedication to Anuja's grandmother, who passed away from Alzheimer's eleven years ago.

Thread · 04

The Community Thread

Singapore's Indian community remains under-reached in dementia awareness. Unsaid Stories is a culturally resonant bridge.
